In 1930, he began studying photography under Hans Finsler at Burg Giebichenstein, subsequently becoming his assistant and succeeding him in 1932. Following the closure of the photography class by the National Socialists in 1933, Koch emigrated to Prague, where he died in a car accident in 1934.
