Throughout his Taormina work, Gloeden used local models, outdoor settings, drapery and classical attributes to create photographs that move between portraiture and tableau. Wreaths, antique costume and architectural props allowed contemporary sitters to assume idealized, timeless identities. This close study distills the characteristic tension in his work between the individual presence of the model and the classicizing fiction of the scene.
