Views of Naples, Pompeii and environs. 1860s-1870s. 40 albumen prints, mounted to album pages. Each ca. 20 x 24,5 cm. Some numbered and titled at lower edge. Bound in a contemporary red canvas album with the gilt-stamped title "Napoli e Pompei" on the front cover.

Giorgio Sommer is renowned for his extensive documentation of Italy’s landscapes and archaeological sites, particularly of Rome, Pompeii, and Naples. His photographs of landmarks such as the Colosseum, the Forum Romanum, Mount Vesuvius, and the ruins of Pompeii played an important role in preserving and sharing Italy’s cultural heritage. Apart from views of Naples, this album offers a compelling visual record of Pompeii, featuring its public baths, the amphitheater, the temples of Mercury and Isis, the villa of Diomedes, and plaster casts of victims of the eruption. Also features the well-known images The Spaghetti Eaters and Delousing Scene.

Pompeii Photographed. Early 1860s. 26 albumen prints, individually mounted to captioned cards. Each ca. 17 x 23,7 cm or reverse (cards 34 x 46,5 cm). Printed captions beneath the photographs; accompanied by 4 pp. of printed title, contents and descriptive text, with the imprint “London: William Mackenzie, Paternoster Row. Glasgow and Edinburgh.” Presented loose, as issued, in the original blind- and gilt-stamped green cloth portfolio, titled “POMPEII PHOTOGRAPHED” (overall size 48 x 35,5 x 2 cm).

An uncommon English-language portfolio from Sommer’s early survey of the Vesuvian sites. The sequence leads through Pompeii’s streets, temples and public spaces, extending to frescoes, reliefs and plaster casts, and thus from monumental architecture to evidence of Roman daily life and the eruption of Vesuvius. Its English descriptive text turned the photographs into a portable archaeological guide for the Victorian Grand Tour market.
The portfolio comprises 24 views of Pompeii and 2 of Herculaneum. Although the contents leaf lists 24 subjects, the present 26-print collation includes additional and variant views.

Égypte et Nubie: sites et monuments les plus intéressants pour l’étude de l’art et de l’histoire. 1851-52. 4 salted paper prints from paper negatives, printed 1853-58, each mounted to an original printed mount. Each 24 x 31 cm (mount 39,5 x 50,8 cm). Titled in the printed mounts: "Tâfah (Taphis) - Ruines de constructions à assises courbes," pl. 113; "Île de Fîleh (Philæ) - Premier pylône - Vue prise de la plate-forme de la colonnade orientale en P," pl. 97; "Erment (Hermonthis) - Vue générale des ruines - Temple et mammisi," pl. 69; and "Deuxième cataracte - Rocher d’Abouçir - Rapides et îlots granitiques," pl. 160. With the photographer, printer and publisher imprints: "Félix Teynard phot."; "Imp. phot. de H. de Fonteny et Cie, f. à Paris en 1851, r. St Nicolas d’Antin, 72"; and "Publié par Goupil et Cie éditeurs, Paris, Londres, Berlin, New York."

A civil engineer by training, Teynard travelled through Egypt and Nubia in 1851-52 to make a systematic photographic survey of ancient monuments and the Nile landscape. Issued by Goupil in installments and finally as a 160-plate atlas, Égypte et Nubie was conceived as a photographic complement to the Description de l’Égypte. The present plates range from the ruins at Tâfah, Philae and Erment to the granite landscape of the Second Cataract, exemplifying Teynard’s measured, architecturally attentive approach.

Photographer unknown. Piaroa people thatching a roof, Orinoco River basin, Venezuela. 1880s. Albumen print, mounted to an album board with 4 smaller albumen prints of Normandy on the verso. 23 x 17,3 cm. Inscribed in ink below the image on the mount: “Atures, indiens Piaroas.”

The Piaroa people, known among themselves as the Huottüja or De'aruhua, are an Indigenous people of South America, who primarily live in the middle Orinoco Basin in present-day Colombia and Venezuela. Since the Piaroa first encountered missionaries and European explorers around 1780, they have maintained an autonomous society with many small, self-governed villages built over a very wide area. Ethnologists and linguists from the 18th century misidentified the Huottuja as three different tribes belonging to the Saliban family, the Ature, Piaroa, and Quàqua, in actuality were three different regional dialects of the same Piaroa ethnic group from the north, center and south.

(Attribued to). El Capitan, 3,300 ft., Yo-Semite Valley, No. 7. 1865-66. Mammoth-plate albumen print, printed ca. 1872, mounted to original board. 51,8 x 40 cm (mount 71,2 x 55,7 cm). With printed title, number and publisher’s imprint beneath the image: “Thomas Houseworth & Co.” and “No. 9 Montgomery St. San Francisco.”

A leading photographer of the American West, Carleton E. Watkins created his celebrated Yosemite views during expeditions of 1861 and 1865-66, using a custom mammoth-plate camera to record the valley’s monumental formations with extraordinary detail. Watkins’s early Yosemite photographs helped shape public appreciation of the region in the years surrounding the 1864 Yosemite Grant, the legislative precursor to the National Park System. Houseworth’s later issue under its own name demonstrates the broad commercial circulation of Watkins’s Yosemite views, whose large-format clarity established a defining nineteenth-century image of the American West.
