Portraits and views of Egypt. 1880s. 6 albumen prints. Circa 27 x 21 cm and 21 x 27 cm. Each with photographer's name in lower right corner, as well as numbered and titled in lower left in the negative, mounted to board, most annotated in pencil below images on mount.
Béchard produced some of the most well-composed and endearing photographs of Egypt. They are not as common as photos by Sebah, Bonfils, Arnoux and Zangaki, as the studio only worked from the 1870s-1880s, whereas the other studios were still producing work throughout the 1890s. The prints offered here are signed by H.(enri) Béchard but prints signed by Émile Béchard, who might have been his brother or even the same person, also exist. – Some surface scuff marks, otherwise strong prints with a rich chocolate-brown tone and in very good condition.

Together with Francis Bedford, the Prince of Wales embarked on an educational trip to the Middle East in 1862. The result is an extraordinary collection of some of the finest early photographs of Cairo and the temples of Upper Egypt, Jerusalem and the Holy Land, Lebanon and Constantinople. But especially Bedford's unusual views of Egyptian temples and landscapes are of timeless beauty and are among the best of their kind. The photographs were compiled for the Prince's souvenir album and today they are part of the Royal Collection. Only a few can be found on the art market today. – Some surface scuff marks, slight fading in edges, otherwise in good condition with strong tones.

This rare and well-preserved photograph was taken after the Prussian attack around the village Düppel (Düppler Schanzen). Like Roger Fenton and Matthew Brady, the photographer C.F. Brandt was an experienced photographer and he participated in the International Photography Exhibition in Berlin in 1865 and was awarded a medal for his exceptional landscapes. – A few light spots/ surface scuff marks, otherwise strong prints in very good condition.

Théophile Auguste Stahl is considered one of the most important photographers working in Brazil in the 19th century and his photographs are known for their high technical and aesthetic quality. Born in Italy, he arrived in Brazil in 1853 and settled in the city of Recife, where he opened a total of three studios. One of these large studios in rua Nova can be seen on a photo offered here on which probably both owners can be seen. In 1858, he teamed up with the photographer and chemist Adolpho Schmidt and the Hamburg painter Germano Wahnschaffe. The photographer's blind stamp shows the joint company, which existed until 1861. – Some retouched spots, otherwise in good condition.
