Architectural model for Tempelhof Airport, Berlin
Los 4325

Ergebnis (inkl. Aufgeld) *
372€ (US$ 400)

Details

Photographer: Arthur Köster (1890-1965). Architectural model for Tempelhof Airport, Berlin. 1937. Vintage ferrotyped gelatin silver print. 12,7 x 18 cm. Keystone agency stamp and typed press text label affixed to the verso.

Arthur Köster began his training in photography in the military during WWI. He had met Günther Wasmuth, director of the architecture/art publishing firm in 1915 and in 1918-20 Köster started working for Wasmuth, staying with the company for six years. Here he met important architects, such as Erich Mendelsohn, Bruno Taut, Mies van der Rohe and Hans and Wassili Luckhardt who encouraged him to establish his own firm, which he did in November 1926.
The architect of Tempelhof Airport, the largest construction in Europe and the representative building of the Nazi regime, was Ernst Sagebiel, who was previously a colleague and second office director of Erich Mendelsohn. This photograph was used for the 1938 printed color brochure (23 x 61 cm) of Lufthansa promoting the new building of the airport. – Some handling marks in lower portion, small crease in upper right corner. With: Original Lufthansa advertising brochure from 1938. - Time-stained in edges.

Faltenwurf TzK
Los 4327

Ergebnis (inkl. Aufgeld) *
1.612€ (US$ 1,733)

Details

"Faltenwurf TzK". 1996. Digital print mounted in green/black cardboard box (some traces of use, edges rubbed). 32,5 x 43 x 3 cm. Signed and editioned 87/100, by the photographer in pencil on box verso. From an edition of Texte zur Kunst.

"With this work, Wolfgang Tillmans returned to his artistic beginnings. Before he took photographs, he worked with copiers, consciously eliminating the difference between reproduction and orientation. In his work, the object acquires an almost hyperreal presence. The effect of the real fools the viewer before she/he recognizes the calculated and fictitious nature of the photograph in the detail and enlargement. In the process, the usual order of time in photography is shifted. The image is not a document of past presence, but a promise of future fullness, thus belonging to the order of the phantasmatic .... It is therefore conceivable that the swimming trunks function as a fetish. This is supported by the fact that the banal object is nobilized by a pretentious wrapping. Fantasy and disappointment go hand in hand: on closer inspection, one recognizes the simple photographic paper box, thus exposing the well-stocked dream as a technically generated illusion". (Translated from www.TextezurKunst.de). – A few light surface spots, some light indentation pit marks in upper/lower left, otherwise in very good condition.

Details

"L'homme qui tombe" (glacons feu series). 1983. Chromogenic print mounted to aludibond. 120 x 160 cm. Edition 1/3, framed under plexiglass in wooden frame.

Parallel to his architectural studies in Paris (1973-1979), Patrick Tosani developed his work in photography in 1976, addressing questions of space and scale. The photographic process and its potential and limits as well as the relationship to reality are constantly questioned in his work in series on objects, the body, clothing, etc. For more than thirty years, he has been regularly exhibited in France and abroad, notably at the Institute of Contemporary Art in London (1987), the Art Institute of Chicago (1992), the Palais des Beaux-Arts of Charleroi (1994), the Museum Folkwang of Essen (1997), the Musée Nicéphore-Niépce of Chalon-sur-Saône (1998), the Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris (2011) and the Museo di Fotografia Contemporanea, Cinisello Balsamo, Milan (2016). – In very good condition.

Los 4332

Ergebnis (inkl. Aufgeld) *
1.488€ (US$ 1,600)

Details

Photographer: Max Schirner agency. June 17, 1953, riots in Berlin, Leipziger Straße and Potsdamer Platz. 1953. 7 vintage ferrotyped gelatin silver press prints. Each circa 18 x 24 cm. 5 with agency stamp, 3 with typed paper press text label and annotated in pencil/ink on the verso.

The riots of 1953 in East Germany took place in June of that year. A strike by East Berlin construction workers on June 16 turned into a widespread uprising against the Stalinist German Democratic Republic government the next day. The riots in Berlin were violently suppressed by tanks of the Soviet Forces in Germany and the Volkspolizei. In spite of the intervention of Soviet troops, the wave of strikes and protests was not easily brought under control. Even after June 17, there were demonstrations in more than 500 towns and villages. – Some traces of use, otherwise in good condition.
