The miner Adolf Hennecke in the former Soviet occupation zone of Germany. 1948. Vintage large-format gelatin silver print. 60 x 50 cm. Photographer's/estate stamp, numbers in red crayon and notations in felt-tip pen on the verso.
On October 13, 1948, miner Adolf Hennecke performed four times the required work standard in an East German coal mine. Basically, it was a well-organized propaganda show to create role models and heroes and to raise work standards. The day before and after he had off. In addition, Hennecke received 1.5 kilograms of the then strictly rationed fat, three packs of cigarettes and a bottle of schnapps. The "Hennecke myth" lasted well into the 1970s in the GDR, and even longer among older people, before fading away completely. – Some handling creases, small loss in lower right corner, a few small tears in edges, otherwise in good condition.
The writer Stefan George (1868-1933). Circa 1910/printed 1920s by Theodor Hilsdorf. Brown-toned gelatin silver print on heavy chamois paper. 21,5 x 16,5 cm. Studio stamp on the verso, mounted along upper edge to original card (crease in upper right, slightly soiled), signed Müller-Hilsdorf in pencil and studio stamp on mount verso.
This image, along with several other images taken by Jacob Hilsdorf of Stefan George, was printed in the mid-1920s by his brother Theodor Hilsdorf using the original negative plates. After Jacob's early death in 1916, Theodor incorporated some of his brother's negatives in his archive. When these were reprinted, they were often signed Müller-Hilsdorf. In 1903 Theodor Hilsdorf had taken over the photography studio of his father-in-law Friedrich Müller. The studio was totally destroyed in 1945 in a bombing raid and only 2000 of the over 100,000 negatives of the archive remained intact. – A fine tonal print in excellent condition.

People of the Balkans. Circa 1919. 7 vintage gelatin silver prints. Each circa 16 x 12 cm. Each flush-mounted to board, annotated in pencil on mount verso.
After WWI as of mid-1915 the American Red Cross had started providing aid for the Balkan countries. In Belgrade there was a large central warehouse for food, medicine and clothes. In 1919, the organization sent the American photographer Lewis Hine, who a decade earlier had created a moving series on child labor in the U.S., to make an extraordinary record of life in the Balkans during some of its darkest moments. Hine took photos in Albania, Romania, Serbia and Bulgaria and was the only Red Cross photographer working in the Balkans at the time. The pictures, with their original captions, offer insight into the various people of the Balkans, as well as the sometimes patronizing perspective of a Western observer of the time. Hine’s survey is ethnographic in nature, like the colonial photo essays of National Geographic at the time. – Corners slightly bumped, some with silver mirroring, a few spots, otherwise in good condition.

Fall fashion photos. 1930s. 3 vintage (1 ferrotyped) gelatin silver prints. Each circa 22,5 x 16,5 cm. Each with photographer's copyright stamp, Schostal agency label, typed press text label and 1 also with additional agency stamps on the verso.
Kitty Hoffmann studied at the Graphische Lehr- und Versuchsanstalt in Vienna where her teachers included Rudolf Koppitz. She then became an assistant in Trude Fleischmann's studio. After 1922 she opened her own studio in Vienna. Numerous images of her work were published in the fashion and illustrated press of the day. A portion of her estate is in the collection of the Photomuseum des Landes Oberösterreich, Bad Ischl. – Corners bumped/creased, some edge wear, one with stronger creasing, some light handling marks, otherwise in good condition.
