Polterabend Familie Schürmann 1867
Souvenir album of the Polterabend costume ball ...

Lot 4082

Photographer: most probably Johann Philipp Hoff (1833 - 1908). Souvenir album: Polterabend costume ball of the wealthy jeweller Eduard Schürmann family, Frankfurt /Main. 1867. 24 albumen prints with rounded corners. Each circa 14 x 11,4 cm. Mounted to gilt-edged boards, alternating with handwritten and painted title in gilt letters and text leaves in poetry form, beige silk flyleaves, bound in opulent contemporary tooled leather album, gilt ornament around inside covers, with silver-plated ornaments and lettering 26 September 1867 and two metal clasps (33,5 x 28,5 cm).

This opulent souvenir album documents some of the costumes and attendees of the Polterabend (wedding-eve party) of the wealthy jeweller Eduard Schürmann family in Frankfurt/Main (Zeil No. 19). Beautiful gilt calligraphic title page and handwritten pages are bound alternately with the photographs. The German custom of the Polterabend is celebrated on the night before a wedding when guests break porcelain to bring good luck to the marriage, following with the German saying "Scherben bringen Glück" (shards bring luck). More distinguished families did not always take the custom of the Polterabend literally. For them the sociable aspect was more important and was often combined with costumes and perfomance. The photographs are exceptionally well composed and many scenes creatively enacted.
The photographer is most likely Johann Philipp Hoff, the son of the Frankfurt artist and lithographer Johann Nikolaus Hoff. He studied sculpture at the Städelsche Kunstinstitut in Frankfurt (1848 - 1852) and then went to Munich where he became an assistant to the lithographer and photographer Franz Hanfstaengl. In 1858 Hoff returned to Frankfurt where he opened his own photographic studio and became one of the most prominent Frankfurt photographers of the 1860s. One can see the influence of Hanfstaengl in the way Hoff poses and photographs his sitters. His studio closed in 1888. – Some pages with light finger marks, a few with small tear, one photograph with light scuff mark, most with some fading around edges, otherwise with strong contrasts and in excellent condition - an extremely well preserved and attractive album.
