Photographer: Bourne & Shepherd. The Maharaja Sir Ranudip Singh Rana Bahadur, first minister of Nepal and other rulers of India. 1865 - 1890s. 7 albumen prints and 1 collodion paper print. Circa 35 x 27 cm and smaller. 7 mounted to board/card (some with traces of use and loss), some annotated in pencil below the image on the mount.

Some faded in edges, Ranudip Singh Rana Bahadur portrait with silverfish damage in edges, some tears and surface spots, otherwise in good condition.

Lot 4062

Photographer uknown. "People of India". 1868 - 1875. 7 albumen prints (oval and arch-topped). Each circa 11 x 15 cm and larger. Mounted to album pages, each with printed caption label below the image on the mount, and with text pages.

This attractive group of portraits is from the eight-volume study entitled "The People of India" between 1868 - 1875. It includes Kookie, Robber tribes; Bhali Sooltans; Moghuls, Mussulmans, of the Royal Family of Delhi; Hindoo Boy dressed as Krishna; Thakoor Tej Sing; Pathan, Mahomedan of Afghan Descent, Bareilly and a Sunwar woman (not from "People of India"). – Some slightly faded in edges, otherwise in good condition.

These prints are from the publication "Illustrations of Ancient Buildings in Kashmir. Prepared under the Authority of the Secretary of State for India in Council from Photographs, Plans, and Drawings Taken by Order of the Government of India" by Henry Hardy Cole published in 1869. The plate numbers are 3, 4, 5, 40, 41, 42, 43. – Some tears/paper loss in lower portion of captions, otherwise with strong contrasts and in very good condition.

Includes a portrait of the last executioner of India, Reva State, 1890, portraits of Delhi Durbar attendees, a group of English soldiers in historic costumes as well as a demonstration of probably the first phonograph in India on May 22, 1891 (later print). – In good to very good condition.

These intriguing portraits include an ascetic during Kumbh Mela, a warrior, a snake charmer, a group of fakirs, a Brahmin during a Puja ceremony, a Shiva ascetic, body piercing for hook suspension and many others. – A few faded/time-stained in edges, some handling marks, otherwise most in good condition.
