Selected views of Egypt

[*] Selected views of Egypt. 1860s. 6 albumen prints. Each circa 21,5 x 27,5 cm. Each signed and numbered by the photographer in the negative in lower left/right corner. Each mounted to board (time-stained in edges, some foxing/soiling), some with title printed below the image on the mount.

Born in Berlin, Wilhelm Hammerschmidt was already a professional photographer when he settled in Cairo, Egypt, around 1860. There he established the Hammerschmidt shop, where he sold photographic materials to other early photographers. Hammerschmidt exhibited ten views of Egypt at the Société Française de Photographie in 1861 before becoming a member the following year. He made costume and ethnographic studies, exhibiting those at the Exposition Universelle Paris in 1867. Hammerschmidt also made photographs in Syria and Nubia. The views in this group show a general view of Cairo, Tombs of the Caliphs, the horse market, Cairo, Hotel Abbat and loaded camels. – Some surface scuff marks, some with foxing spots, some fading in edges, otherwise strong prints and in good condition.

[*] Freiburg Münster seen from Schlossberg. 1850s. Albumen print with rounded corners. 16,1 x 12,3 cm. Mounted to original card (slight traces of use), with gilt lettering G. Th. Hase, Maler & Hofphotograph in Freiburg i. B. and ornamental border on the mount, as well as around edge of image.

Gottlieb Theodor Hase participated in the International Photography Exhibition in Berlin in 1865 and showed thirty of his Schwarzwald images, which established him as an accomplished photographer. Such early photos by Hase are very rare on the art market and this image is one of the earliest views of Freiburg. – A few light spots in sky area, otherwise a strong print in very good condition.

Each circa 19,5 x 25 cm. Some with title and number in the negative in lower edge, mounted to gilt-edged album boards (slightly warped, some foxing/soiling), bound in contemporary decorative black lacquer album with relief scene and mother-of-pearl inlay (some pieces missing, a few small chips), with leather spine (rubbed), 32 x 40 cm.

A very attractive album with many images of geisha, genre scenes and attractive landscapes and temples. Also inlcudes a print of Felice Beato's "Groom" 1868 (faded). – Some prints slightly faded, some with light surface scuff marks/scratches, otherwise in good to very good condition and with delicate hand-coloring.
