Private souvenir album, probably of a German weapons dealer travelling in China. Circa 1900-1906. Circa 200 vintage collodion paper prints. Various sizes between 7 x 10 cm and 21 x 26 cm. Mounted to album boards, bound as leporello in black lacquer Japanese album (chipped in edges/corners, crack on back cover) with genre motif inlay (some pieces missing).

Apart from weapon demonstrations for high ranking Chinese officials (large-format photographs), the images show the arrival of German soldiers at the Peking train station as well as harbor scenes, street life in cities, temples, villages and landscapes in China. A small group shows destroyed Russian warships from the Russo-Japanese War and one shows a small Japanese submarine. – Some prints with light surface rubbing/buckling, some faded, some with oxidation mirroring in edges, otherwise many in good condition.

"Die Gebärdensprache dargestellt für Schauspieler sowie für Maler und Bildhauer". Text brochure with plate titles, 94 cartes de visite photos mounted to 25 plates. 25,3 x 18 cm. Contemporary brown canvas volume with gilt-stamped cover. Cologne, M. DuMont-Schauberg, 1886.

Carl Michel studied medicine and became a dedicated doctor. In his free time he began studying classical theater roles and sometimes appeared in smaller roles in local theaters. Up until 1892 he had a successful doctors practice in Cologne. After having established a strong financial base he decided to solely commit himself to acting which also led to the publication of this book showing him in various poses and with an array of expressions. – Some images faded in edges, some with surface scuff marks, otherwise in good condition.

Photographer: Francis Chit (1830-1891) and Paul Rossier (1829-1886). Portrait of Chulalongkorn with two brothers; Wat Arun seen across the Chao Phraya. 1862-67. 2 albumen prints. 19,8 x 14,4 cm and 14,7 x 20,8 cm. Each flush-mounted to board, sitter's names/locations on printed labels on mount verso.

Some fading, some with writing on verso visible on recto, some foxing spots.

Glass dishes. 1930-31. Vintage ferrotyped gelatin silver print on ivory paper. 17,8 x 23,6 cm. Stamp of Hans Finsler's student Heinrich Koch Halle/S. and estate stamp on the verso.

Hans Finsler was born in Heilbronn. He later studied architecture in Stuttgart and Munich and art history in Munich, Berlin and Halle. In 1922 he took a teaching post at the Burg Giebichenstein Kunstgewerbeschule, near Halle, where he ran an influential photography class. Among his students was Heinrich Koch whose estate this print is from. He returned to Zurich in 1932. In 1929 he took part in the Film und Foto exhibition in Stuttgart, showing 37 of his photographs. – Some oxidation mirroring in upper right and lower left, small handling mark in lower right, otherwise a fine tonal print in near excellent condition.

Images from the Jewish ghetto in Wilna

Images from the Jewish ghetto in Wilna. Circa 1929/ printed later. 17 gelatin silver prints on Agfa paper. 24 x 18 cm and 18 x 24 cm and some smaller. Each with photographer's stamp on the verso.

Moses Vorobeichic (Moi Ver) first studied painting in Vilnius, and then went to the Bauhaus in Dessau in 1927, where he studied with Paul Klee and Wassily Kandinsky, among others. It was there that he first became involved with photography. Later he went to the Ecole de photo et du cinéma in Paris. His first major project was a study of Vilnius, which he showed in the form of photo collages in an exhibition at the Zionist Congress in Zurich in 1929 and published as a book in 1931 with the support of Emil Schaeffer, editor of the Schaubuch series. The book, Ein Ghetto im Osten - Wilna, was published in six bilingual versions (Hebrew-Yiddish; Hebrew-English; Hebrew-German; Yiddish-German; English-German) with a total circulation of 12,500 copies. Moi Ver showed the life of the orthodox Jews of his hometown at the time of Passover in 1929 in a modern form. – In good to very good condition.

This group comprises a large series of photographic work created between the 1970s - 1990s. It includes Brandenburg landscapes, scenes from villages and small towns such as Kraatz, Waldegk, Blücherhof, Parmen, Zernikow as well as Wittenberge, Schwarze Pumpe, Spremberg, Magdeburg and Berlin. Today Wüst's rather sober images offer important documents of the GDR and at the same time present a strangely surreal world. – In very good to excellent condition.
