Folies Bergère, Paris. 1956. Vintage gelatin silver print on Agfa-Brovira paper. 18 x 24,8 cm. Annotated in ballpoint pen/pencil, layout marks in pencil and publication label on the verso.

The Italian photographer Frank Horvat started out as a photo journalist working mainly as a reporter during the 1950s. He was a member of Magnum from 1958 - 1961. However, he is mainly known for his expressive fashion shots, mostly taken with a Leica, which were published in magazines like Harper’s Bazaar or Vogue. His images are governed by a dynamic, spontaneous visual aesthetic which is also clearly reflected by the "Strip-Tease" photographs. – Corners slightly bumped, traces of previous mounting on verso, otherwise in very good condition.

Tree in the middle of a field, from the series ...

Los 4205

"Tree in the middle of a field", from the series "Portraits of Trees" (1976 - 1982). 1979. Vintage fresson print. 19,7 x 29,5 cm (30,8 x 40,8 cm). Signed by the photographer in pencil in lower right in margin.

In the 1970s the gradual disappearance of the magazines Horvat worked for and the necessity to adapt his work for the surviving ones with the taste of a less sophisticated audience led Horvat to search for new approaches. He decided to start working as an author, rather than as a free-lance contributor. As he himself stated: "to 'be my own client'. My first personal project, on which I worked for several years, was ‘Portraits of Trees’". – Minimal handling marks in upper right and in margins, corners slightly bumped, otherwise in very good condition.
