Los 4047

"Shinimo Altar from Brink of Marble Canyon of the Colorado River, Arizona" and "Navajo Church near Fort Wingate, New Mexico". 1870s. 2 albumen prints. Each circa 33 x 25 cm. Photographer's name and title in the negative in lower corners, each mounted to board (some soiling, light foxing).

John K. Hillers began making photographs while exploring the terrain around the Colorado River in 1871. Part of a survey team led by John Wesley Powell, a geologist and ethnologist, Hillers was originally hired as a boatman. He became increasingly interested in the work of the team's photographer, began acting as his assistant, and by 1872 had become the expedition photographer. From the 1870s until about 1900, Hillers continued working for Powell, who became the first director of the U.S. Bureau of Ethnology. The emphasis of Hillers's work gradually shifted from geology and geography to archaeology and ethnology. He spent almost twenty years exploring the Indian Territories, California, the Southwest, and the Southeast, eventually producing a sensitive record of Native Americans and their way of life. The Bureau of Ethnology and Geological Survey publications reproduced his work, and examples also appeared at numerous international expositions. – With strong tones and in very good condition.

Portrait of the missionary Samuel Hebich

Los 4049

Photographer: Friedrich Brandseph (1826 - 1916). Portrait of the missionary Samuel Hebich (1803 - 1868). Early 1860s. Albumen print. 28 x 24 cm. Mounted to original board (slightly soiled, some edge wear) with original gilt-lined mat window, the sitters name in ink and photographer's name printed on mat.

Samuel Hebich was one of the first missionaries in India. His education was rather modest but his urge to convert the heathen was very strong. Up until 1833 the Christian mission in India was prohibted by the East India Company. Shortly after its revision, together with two other missionaries, Hebich traveled to India on part of the Basler Mission, arriving in Calicut (Kerala) on Oct. 13, 1834. His lack of understanding of Indian religious life and his great fervor often lead to violent confrontations with inhabitants. – A few surface scratch marks, traces of glue from mat and fade line from mat window, otherwise in good condition.
