View from Unter den Linden to Kronprinzenpalais and dome of the Castle chapel, Berlin. Before 1856. Salt print with rounded corners. 16 x 21,8 cm. Mounted to original board (traces of previous mounting and number in red crayon on the verso) with photographer's stamp below the image on the mount.

When he took this photograph Leopold Ahrendts was standing next to the Neue Wache and the Bülow statue which figures prominently in the left side of the image. At the center of the image is the impressive dome of the Castle (built 1845 - 1853) and to the right is the Kronprinzenpalais still before its reconstruction in 1856-57. – A few light foxing spots in sky areas, otherwise a strong, tonal print in excellent condition.

Each mounted to board (soiled, time-stained in edges) with printed title and text (archive stamp in lower portion), in original black embossed boards with gilt-pressed title (edge wear, corners bumped, slightly dusty) with St. Petersburg, German St. Petersbourg Times, 1862.

Interesting photographs of sculpted wax heads representing the various races of the five continents: Oceania, America, Europe, Asia and Africa. – Some photos with scuff marks, otherwise in good condition and several with strong contrasts.

A rare view of Caernafon Castle in Wales, probably taken shortly before the restoration of the towers which began in 1870. The castle is still important in the history of Great Britain. On July 13, 1911 the investiture of Prince Edward (later King Edward VIII) and on July 1, 1969 the investiture of Prince Charles as the Prince of Wales took place in this castle. – Some surface scuff marks due to age, otherwise in good condition with strong tones.

The portraits show the Grand Visier Salarjung, The Gohil Rajput of Rajpipla; Maharaja Bhavani Singh of Datia; Maharaja of Edur; Maharaja Singh of Bundelkhand; Maharaja Holkar of Indore; Raja of Seyllana, Malwa; Maharaja Daleep Sing of Lahore and Sultana Shahjahan Begum of Bhopal. – A few faded, some scuff marks, otherwise in good condition.

In the 19th century in India women usually did not have their photographic portrait taken unless they were public dancers/musicians (nautch girls, tawai'fs) or women belonging to the wealthy Parsi community in Bombay. – Some faded, some scuff marks, otherwise some in good condition.

Landscapes and British troops in Afghanistan

(Attributed to). Landscapes and British troops in Afghanistan. Circa 1880. 9 albumen prints. Each circa 24 x 29 cm and some smaller. Each mounted to board, annotated in German in ink below the images on the mount.

During the Second Anglo-Afghan War John Burke and William Baker accompanied the British troops on their campaign. The images show a military tent camp, forts and castles, important bridges and landscapes.

Portraits of Russian military officers, monks, ...

[*] Portraits of Russian military officers, monks, pilgrims and farmers. 1860s. 20 hand-colored albumen cartes-de-visite prints. Each circa 8,5 x 5,5 cm. Most with number in the negative in lower right, each mounted to original studio carte-de-visite board (slight soiling and some with light edge wear), some with photographer's name in lower edge on mount, most with photographer's logo and 3 signed by the photographer and 4 also with J. Daziaro stamp on the verso.

William Carrick was a Scottish-Russian artist and photographer. Born in Edinburgh, he grew up in Kronstadt. In 1844 the family moved to St. Petersburg where he attended the Academy of the Arts and studied architecture. During a short return to Edinburgh in 1857, to gain more experience with photography, he met the photographic technician John MacGregor. He then returned to Russia taking MacGregor with him to open a business. MacGregor served as his assitant and Carrick became the pioneering photographer of Russian ethnographic subjects. In 1871 Carrick and MacGregor made many rural expeditions including a month long trip to Simbirsk province. Here he gathered a large number of images depicting the lives of Russian and Mordovian peasants. Carrick photographed with great humanity and sympathy for his subjects. These images were very successful with tourists and are very rare today. – Some minimal surface rubbing, otherwise in good condition and several with strong contrasts.

Davanne, Louis-Alphonse

Born in Paris in 1824, Louis-Alphonse Davanne was a chemist and important photographer. He was a founding member of the Société Francaise de la Photographie and the president from 1876 - 1901. He was very active in investigating new photographic processes and he travelled and photographed broadly, including in France, Italy, Germany and Algeria. – Some minor surface scuff marks, otherwise in good condition with strong tones.
