Crupi, Giovanni and Wilhelm von Gloeden
Selected images of Taormina and other sites in ...

Los 4031

Selected images of Taormina and other sites of Sicily. Circa 1900. 22 albumen prints. Each circa 23 x 18 cm. Most with name and title in the negative in lower edge, each mounted to board (slightly warped).

Giovanni Crupi was the teacher of Wilhelm von Gloeden and they worked together in Taormina. Various views of Pompei and Palermo by Crupi appear to have been taken at the same time as similar images by von Gloeden, which suggests that the two men also traveled together. Gloeden learned about various techniques and papers from Crupi such as the salt print and matte gelatin silver print. The authorship of their work has often been interchanged due to their close collaboration. Also inlcudes one print by Gaetano d'Agata (unmounted). – In good to very good condition.
