John Sex

Los 4114

John Sex. Circa 1984. Vintage gelatin silver print. 40,2 x 50,3 cm. Signed, dated and authenticated by Allen Frame and annotated by John Heys in pencil on the verso.

John McLaughlin (April 8, 1956 – October 24, 1990), better known by the stage name John Sex, was an American cabaret singer and performance artist in New York City from the late 1970s until his death in 1990. After early work as a gay stripper, Sex became an alternative performance artist, creating a character based on an exaggerated Las Vegas lounge singer and MC. He was able to further refine the combination of performance art, drag act, gay go-go dancer, cabaret singer, lounge MC, etc. as a performance art dancer who performed at such legendary New York clubs as Club 57, the Pyramid Club, Danceteria, The Palladium, Paradise Garage and Andy Warhol's Underground. – Corners bumped, traces of previous mounting and some emulison loss in upper margin, otherwise a rich tonal print in very good condition.

Plant studies

Los 4120

Plant studies. 1915 -1934. 6 vintage large-format gelatin silver prints. Each circa 29 x 22,7 cm. Each mounted in mat (some time-staining), signed and titled by the photographer in pencil on overmat. In linen/board portfolio with handwritten title Paul Dobe Pflanzenstudien in ink on front cover.

Trained as a mechanic and technical draughtsman in Magdeburg, Dobe came to Berlin in 1903 with the aim of studying at the Unterrichtsanstalt des Königlichen Kunstgewerbemuseums (now the University of the Arts). There Karl Blossfeldt had begun his teaching activity in 1899 on the subject of the "study of natural forms" and it is quite possible that Dobe knew about its teaching.
Paul Dobe, however, left Berlin to intensify his studies at the private Debschitz School in Munich. Under the influence of the sculptor Hermann Obrist, one of the founders of the school, Dobe discovered his life theme of the "little flower" with the help of a microscope. For him, it became a universal example of how to illustrate the principles of life. Pencil drawings, sketches and silhouettes were his tools for depicting plant forms.
In 1929, his publication "Wilde Blumen der deutschen Flora", illustrated with photographs, appeared in the series Die Blauen Bücher. In 1919/1920 Dobe taught at the newly founded Bauhaus in Weimar, with lectures on "Nature as Source of Art with Special Consideration of Plants".
The images offered here are titled in German: "Wiesen Bocksbart", "Erle", "Wiesenklee", "Staubblatt", "Stempelgruppe", "Ahornknospe" and respectively in their Latin name. Most of the photographs are reproductions of paintings Dobe made on wood and two images use photographic silhouettes to create a photogram-like effect. – In very good condition.
