Baldus, Edouard-Denis
Notre-Dame de Paris

Los 4005

Notre-Dame de Paris. Circa 1855. Salt print. 20 x 26 cm (mount 34 x 44 cm). Mounted to original card (slightly soiled, slight edge wear), photographer's signature stamp and number 94 in pencil below the image on the mount.

It was Victor Hugo's novel "Notre-Dame de Paris. 1482", published in 1831, that brought the beauty of the building back into focus and contributed (1844) to the decision for a comprehensive restoration campaign under the direction of Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, which only came to an end twenty years later. Many damaged figures were replaced and a new high ridge turret (La flèche) made of lead-clad wood was erected. The large amount of building material and tools can still be clearly seen in this photograph. According to this, the restoration was not yet completed.
On the evening of April 15, 2019, a major fire broke out in the cathedral, which was brought under control early in the morning of the following day. Large parts of the oak truss burnt, the wooden crossing tower collapsed and the vaults of the naves were breached in at least two places. – Two minor retouched scuff marks, light spot near upper edge, otherwise a rich, strong print in near excellent condition.

Lit.: Metropolitan Museum of Art and Canadian Centre of Architecture. The Photographs of Edouard Baldus. New York 1994.

Errata: The photograph was taken more likely 1859/60.

Béchard, Henri
Views of Egypt

Los 4007

Views of Egypt: ruins, temples of Karnak, landscapes and portraits. Mid-1870s. 7 albumen prints. Circa 26,5 x 37,4 cm and 37,4 x 26,5 cm. Each with photographer's name in lower right corner, as well as numbered and titled in lower left in the negative, mounted to board, annotated in pencil below images on mount, 2 with collector's label on mount verso.

Béchard produced some of the most well-composed and endearing photographs of Egypt. They are not as common as photos by Sebah, Bonfils, Arnoux and Zangaki, as the studio only worked from the 1870s-1880s, whereas the other studios were still producing work throughout the 1890s. The prints offered here are signed by H.(enri) Béchard but prints signed by Émile Béchard, who might have been his brother or even the same person, also exist. – Some surface scuff marks, otherwise strong prints with a rich chocolate-brown tone and in very good condition.
