Photographer: Felice Beato (1824 - 1909), Aurélien Pestel (1855 - 1897) and unknown. Group portraits. 1870s - 1890s. 13 albumen prints. Various sizes, most circa 18 x 24 cm and larger. 5 mounted to board.

The images include Burmese monks and priests in front of their pagodas, a rare group image of a tribe with weapons (Pestel), a group of Dacoits of the Ye-U jungles (Beato), street musicians, orchestras and actors, landscapes and teakwood exploitation. – Some light handling marks/surface scuff marks, a few faded, some repaired tears, some with traces of previous mounting on the verso, otherwise several in very good condition.

Two albums documenting the visit of Prince Heinrich of Prussia (1862 - 1929) to Hankou and other cities. 1898 - 99. Circa 110 vintage collodion paper prints. Each circa 21 x 27 cm and some smaller. Mounted to board, bound in 2 half-leather albums (spine missing, 1 replaced with tape, edges rubbed)

Many images show the important visit of Prince Heinrich of Prussia in Hankou and other cities in 1899. Includes large views of historic monuments, landscapes, harbor scenes and city views as well as military barracks and staff and members of the German settlement in Hankou. – Some photos with surface damage/scuff marks, some buckling from mounting, otherwise most in good to very good condition.

[*] Large souvenir album of the river gunboat S.M.S. Vorwärts on the Yangtze River. 1904 - 1906. Circa 204 vintage collodion paper prints. Most circa 12 x 17 cm. Mounted to colored album boards, 4 to 1 board, most with caption on paper label in German in ink below image on the mount, bound in beige strong linen album (slightly soiled, otherwise well-preserved) with gilt-stamped title SMS Vorwärts 1904-1906.

The S.M.S Vorwärts was built in China to protect and secure German concessions along the Yangtze River. This comprehensive album shows many larger cities as well as smaller villages of inner China. The views include Yichang and surroundings, Hankou, Nanking, Changsha, Dongting lake, Langshan district as well as views of Tsingtau. Also contains rare images of some famous ships such as S.M.S. Prinz-Eitel-Friedrich, S.M.S. Iltis, S.M.S. Fürst Bismarck and S.M.S. Hertha in Tsingtau harbor, the Russian battleship Tsesarevich, S.M.S. Bremen in Shanghai harbor, a Chinese cannon boat in Nanking and many small Chinese junks along the river. – Some prints with light surface rubbing/buckling, otherwise most in very good condition with strong contrasts.

Souvenir album of a marine aboard the gunboat S.M.S. Luchs. 1907 - 1909. Circa 130 vintage collodion paper prints. Most circa 12 x 17 cm, some smaller/larger. Mounted to album boards, 4 to 1 board, most with caption in German in ink below image on the mount, bound in black lacquer Japanese album (chipped in edges, spine missing) with mother of pearl inlay (pieces missing).

The album begins with a group picture of the complete staff of the S.M.S Luchs and documents the voyage via Suez, Siam, Hongkong, images of the Yangtze River, Hankou, Shjanghai, Tsingtau and Japan. Also contains images of some famous ships such as the S.M.S. Luchs, troop transporter S.M.S. Borussia, the torpedo boat Takuisse, S.M.S. Iltis, the gunboat S.M.S. Jaguar, the river gunboat S.M.S. Vaterland and a Russian torpedo fleet in Tsingtau harbor. – Some prints with light surface rubbing/buckling, otherwise most in good condition with strong contrasts.
